Nikon D850 FX-format Digital SLR Camera Review – Configuration: Base

I’ve used a lot of Nikon cameras and have plenty of lenses. I use my gear professionally as well as for personal use. The D850 joins just a few cameras with jaw dropping performance. It provides the best from a series of cameras, therefore has very few weaknesses.

AF performance is outstanding – and collectively probably the top reason for getting this camera. The D850 uses the same AF system as the D500 and D5. In demanding, action photography, I had a 40% improvement in the in focus keeper rate using the D500 compared to the D810 and more vs. the D800E.

AF is faster and more accurate especially because it has a separate AF processor and is an updated system with more coverage and new AF area modes. If you take the time to use AF properly, it makes a big difference. There still can be challenging situations, but this is a major step forward.

With AF come new AF features. At the top of my list is the new automated focus stacking capability. This feature is useful for both macro and landscape photography when you need more depth of field than is normally possible. I’ve tested the feature at various distances, apertures, and settings.

Nikon D850 FX-format Digital SLR Camera Review – Possibilities

There are a lot of possibilities. It’s like focus bracketing, but highly automated in a smart manner to allow capturing a big stack of images to choose the right frame or stack them all together. Silent mode allows this to happen in a few seconds in complete silence.

AF also offers a new function called Precision AF – an extra small AF point for use with Live View when you need precise focus. It goes without saying that this is a high resolution camera with a big 46 MP file. The file allows you to capture great detail. But there are also Medium and Small RAW format files that allow you to choose the file size you need. The Medium and Small RAW files are true 12 bit raw files – smaller but still with plenty of detail for most situations.

Nikon D850 FX-format Digital SLR Camera Review – View Finder

The viewfinder is bigger than anything I’ve ever used. It’s nice having a bigger viewfinder – the difference between a small screen and a large one. The tilt touch screen LCD is very useful. Some function – like the Focus Series – work with the display. The tilt capability makes it especially easy to use at odd angles or in bright light.

The is a new Information display button that provides a lot of context sensitive access to menus and settings at a touch. It’s easy to customize to fit your needs. There are programmable function buttons as with earlier cameras. The My Menu function brings menu items to your fingertips. You can even program a function button to open My Menu for easier access.

I find more value in Low ISO than High ISO performance. I use low ISO levels when I want a longer exposure for moving water or slower exposures. Hi ISO has stopped being a major differentiating factor. This camera does a great job with minimal noise at high ISO levels, but we are approaching theoretical limits and it appears the improvement is more due to processing than sensor technology.

Either way, images have less color noise and a mild luminance noise even at high ISO levels. This camera has had more pre-orders than any Nikon camera ever. Yes – there is a backlog. But the camera is just stunning and lives up to all the press and reviews. Furthermore, I hope you received some good insight from our Digital SLR Camera Review.
